Argentinian amateur racing driver who also represented his country at sailingThe Argentinian sportsman Roberto Mieres, who has died aged 87, was a fine example of the kind of gifted amateur racing driver who could still find a place in the grand prix races of the 1950s. At the wheel of a Gordini or a Maserati, he could be relied upon to give a decent account of himself, if seldom managing to embarrass the great stars of the day.
