Burma reforms leave many disorientated by pace of change

US responds to developments by announcing it will send an ambassador to Burma for the first time since 1990Earlier this month, an excited crowd stood on a pavement in the centre of Rangoon, Burma’s southern port city, clapping as they watched images of monks demonstrating and police baton charges on a big outdoor screen. Their applause was for the courage of those who had organised a film festival and had shown footage shot during protests against Burma’s secretive and often brutal regime only four years ago.
